We’re excited to be continuing our 3D Sleep Webinar Series – a monthly program designed to help dentists and their teams build confidence, improve communication, and achieve better outcomes in dental sleep medicine.
Bruxism is commonly encountered in clinical practice, yet its diagnosis and clinical significance are often misunderstood. This webinar focuses on the recognition, assessment, and clinical interpretation of bruxism, helping clinicians move beyond assumptions and towards a more structured, evidence-informed approach.
We will explore the types of bruxism, understand the limitations of current diagnostic methods, and identify when bruxism is clinically relevant — and when it may not be. Practical frameworks will be provided to support decision-making in everyday practice.
You’ll Learn:
- How to recognise the clinical signs and reported symptoms of bruxism, and their limitations.
- The difference between sleep bruxism and awake bruxism, and why this matters.
- How to take a focused history and perform a structured clinical assessment.
- Which patients may be at higher risk, and how to interpret contributing factors (e.g. psychosocial, sleep-related, medical).
- The challenges and limitations of current diagnostic criteria, including the concept of “possible,” “probable,” and “definite” bruxism.
- How to determine clinical relevance, when bruxism is likely contributing to tooth wear, pain, or restorative risk, and when it may be incidental.
- How to communicate findings clearly to patients without overdiagnosing or overtreating.
- A brief overview of management principles, with emphasis on when intervention is appropriate.
